Buy and sell vehicles safely

Use this checklist before meeting, sharing documents, or sending any payment.

  1. Verify the person.
    Confirm the seller's or buyer's identity and make sure names match the ownership documents.
  2. Inspect the vehicle.
    Meet in a secure public place during daytime and bring a trusted mechanic when possible.
  3. Check the documents.
    Review the original OR/CR, plate and chassis details, encumbrance status, and transfer requirements.
  4. Test drive responsibly.
    Agree on the route, keep identification, and confirm that insurance and registration are current.
  5. Protect your payment.
    Never pay for a vehicle you have not inspected. Use traceable payment methods and obtain signed receipts.
  6. Report suspicious activity.
